Cyclones are huge revolving storms caused by winds blowing around a central area of low atmospheric pressure. In the northern hemisphere, cyclones are called hurricanes or typhoons and in the southern hemisphere, these tropical storms are known as cyclones. Tropical cyclones don't only destroy houses and trees; they also bring heavy rains and cause major flooding by swirling winds that rotate in a huge cycle which can be up to 2000 km across. Cyclone “Yemyin” made landfall near Ormara, about 150 km west of Karachi in Balochistan Province on June 25, 2007 causing devastating floods in Balochistan and Sindh provinces with hundreds dead, thousands injured and millions displaced. Once again, taking the initiative, IMC and HOH promptly started a Flood Relief Operation by deploying a team in the affected areas who participated in relief operations. IMC have provided dry food rations, tents, medicines, etc. worth Rs 16 lacs in the first phase of our Flood Relief Operations. Apart from donating goods for the flood victims in Balochistan, a Flood Relief Camp was set up on July 14 in partnership with HOPE an NGO, for the flood affected villages and settlements around Kharochand near Keti Bandar in lower Sindh (See map). Over 1000 patients were treated by a team of doctors and paramedics and food rations were provided to 100 families.
In addition to the current Flood Relief Operations, we have participated extensively in earthquake relief operations during 2005 and 2006, and have conducted flood relief operations in Balochistan and Sindh in prior years.
